Set in Italy during World War II, the film introduces us to Colonel Richard Cantwell, a true war hero who faces the news of his terminal illness with stoic indifference. Determined to spend a weekend in quiet solitude, hunting ducks and visiting old places in Venice, a chance encounter with a young countess begins to awaken in him the hope of renewal.
