One ordinary morning, Harold Fry leaves the house to drop a letter in the mailbox. Recently retired, Harold responds to a letter from an old friend and co-worker who, after a silence of almost twenty years, has just informed him that she is admitted to a hospital and is about to die. As Harold prepares to mail the letter, a sudden impulse compels him to carry the message to the addressee himself on an impromptu journey on foot from one end of the country to the other.
