Jagna is a young girl from a humble family determined to forge her own destiny in the small town in the Polish countryside where she lives. The place is a hotbed of gossip and ongoing disputes, where rich and poor share pride in their land, local traditions and a deeply rooted patriarchy. Here Jagna will be caught between the conflicting desires of the village’s richest landowner, a much older man she is forced to marry, her son Antek with whom she is having a secret affair, and other members of the community. But her rebelliousness and independence will end up making her the center of everyone’s envy and hatred.
