The Red Island is set in Madagascar in the early 1970s, in one of the last air bases of the French army, where military families live the last throes of colonialism. Thomas, a 10-year-old boy strongly influenced by reading the stories of the intrepid heroine Fantomette, observes with fascination everything around him, while the world gradually opens up to another reality.
