Maruja and her husband Manolo were forced to flee Spain after the civil war and have been living in Paris ever since, but they have never managed to leave behind their past and the reasons that led them to go into exile. They work as a service for an American ambassador and his family: the Jolis. Ms. Jolis and Mr. Jolis are overwhelmed by all the social gatherings they have, so their son Alan has practically been raised by Maruja and Manolo. This year, Maruja discovers that it could be her last summer, something that will encourage her to confront her past and return to her origins on a trip to Spain where she will have to make sure that Alan will grow up to be a good man. In doing so, Manolo will be challenged by the secrets that his marriage managed to bury long ago. Can they return from this journey stronger or will their secrets destroy this unconventional family?
