José Sánchez del Río is a 13-year-old young man, the youngest son of one of the most respected families in his native Sahuayo, a city in the state of Michoacán in Mexico. In 1926, a religious persecution against Christians was ordered by the government of Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles, which led to a war known as the Cristero War. José asks for his parents’ blessing to enlist in the Cristero army and fight in defense of his faith against the federal forces of President Calles. During one of the confrontations, in a heroic act, Joseph gives up his horse to his general so that he can save himself and he is captured. Transferred to his hometown, he is imprisoned, tortured and finally executed for treason, in a process that bears similarities to the passion of Christ.
